But what is the history of this refreshing cocktail? The exact origins are unclear, but the first version of this drink was noted in the late 1800s. Some say it was created in Martinez, California. Historians claim the drink was invented there during the Gold Rush. It’s been said that a gold miner went to a local bar to celebrate his recent fortune. He requested champagne, but they didn’t have it, so the bartender created a beverage from gin, vermouth, bitters, maraschino liqueur, and a slice of lemon. He named it “The Martinez Special.” According to the story, the miner tried to order this drink in San Francisco, the bartender took note of the ingredients and soon the drink was listed in the Bartender’s Manual in the 1880s.
Many disagree with this story and say that the martini got its start at the Knickerbocker Hotel in New York City. These sources say that a bartender named Martini di Arma di Taggia created the drink in 1911 for John D. Rockefeller. The ingredients to this martini? London Dry Gin, dry vermouth, bitter, lemon peel and an olive.
There are even more theories on where the martini got started. As you can see, this tasty cocktail’s origins are shrouded in mystery, as all good things are. One thing is for sure-it is one of those drinks that has remained popular throughout the years and for good reason.
